Charles SMART was convicted at Bath Quarter sessions 5 Jan 1849 of stealing a copper boiler sentenced to five months. Then 4th July 1851 convicted for stealing 25 pounds weight of lead pipe value three shillings, sentenced to 10 years transportation. Charles arrived in Freemantle, Western Australia on the ship "Dudbrook" - convict No.1567 on 7th February 1853. All prisoners arriving in Australia had their particulars recorded, Charles is stated to have been 5 feet 4 ins tall, black hair, blue eyes. with a long face and sallow complexion. Slight build, marks: scar to centre forehead,; tattoos - sun & figure on right arm; anchor, GS, hearts, darts on left arm. Occupation: carter, Status: single. He never lived to see his freedom for he died in Albany 1 Sep 1859 from natural causes.
