George TREW (listed as FREW in "Dudbrook" list) was a 23 yr. old married man and father of an eleven month old baby boy when he was convicted of "Night Poaching & Malicious Wounding" at the Bury St. Edmunds court 1st April, 1851. He and eight others had gone to Lord Stradbroke's property in Bruisyard (Suffolk) with the intention of stealing pheasants.
They were all caught in the act by 4 local gamekeepers. In the melee that followed, George TREW's dog was shot and killed. This caused George to retaliate and shoot at the gamekeeper causing a wound to the loin and head. He was convicted to transportation to W.A. for 10 years (later reduced to 7 years), never to see his wife and son again. George spent time in Pentonville, Millbank and Dartmore prisons before departing on "Dudbrook" on 12th November, 1852. Described on Millbank records:
TREW, George, 23 yrs, 10st.12lb, 5'4 1/4". Light Brown hair, Blue eyes, Fresh/round complexion, scar left eyebrow, married one child, Dissentor, literate, farmer labourer, good character, "Night Poaching" 7 yrs., no previous imprisonments, conduct good, Class 1, Father: Nathaniel TREW Framlingham.
Because the Fremantle Prison was not yet completed, George would have spent his first months at the "Convict Establishment" which was set up as a convict prison and stood where the now Esplanade Hotel is situated in Fremantle. He may have worked on the construction of the new prison. He was granted his Ticket of Leave on 5th January, 1854. George applied for his wife and son to join him but there was "no response" (she had died in 1853 - nothing known about the survival of their son William TREW). George TREW married Eliza FISHER (she had arrived in the colony in 1843 via "Success") at the York Church on 27th January, 1856. His Conditional Pardon was granted on the 9th October, 1858. In the 1859 York Census, George was working as a labourer/shepherd & grazier with farmer, A.S. Clarke and they lived at Cut Hill, York.
